When Stephenie Meyer began penning her Twilight series, she never could have dreamed how big the phenomenon of vampires would become.

“Twilight” was the first work of teen literature that introduced young adults to the world of vampires. Vampires had historically been portrayed as predators and harmful to humans. The vampires in the book proved that although they are hunters in nature, they could peacefully coexist with the human world.

The Twilight series also became some of the most popular romance novels published to date. The unorthodox romance between Bella and Edward, the main characters, gave teens an inside look at a relationship that could not progress physically due to the risk of harm between the two of them.

The Twilight Series was also the first of its kind to bridge the gap between young adult readers and their parents. Many moms and daughters bonded over reading the series together, and it became the perfect launching pad for discussions about relationships and feelings.

“Twilight” set many records in the teen literature world, from number of sales to distribution in many countries overseas. It has sparked hundreds of other vampire novels and spin off books, including fan written fiction and internet publications.

When it comes right down to it, whether you cared for the writing or not, whether you loved Robert Pattinson or Kirsten Stewart or not, you cannot argue that the Twilight movie introduced a whole new generation to the beautiful vampire.

The first thing that you need to keep in mind is that this is not a new trope at all. Dracula was considered nearly pornographic when the first novel was introduced, and since then, movies like Lost Boys and Interview With the Vampire have continued the trend. The ability to live forever without growing old or sick is an intriguing and attractive concept, and with vampires who prefer to feed off animals instead of humans, it is even relatively moral!

What Twilight did was spawn a great deal of new interest in this familiar trope. It is very likely that Twilight had a lot to do with the inception of the popular television series The Vampire Diaries, for example, and it has introduced an entire new generation of book lovers and film fans to learn more about a new interpretation of these fantastic monsters.

Twilight also had the benefit of creating its own mythology, something that many works take on, and it deserves credit for its place in modern vampire lore.

One of the most classic teen book series featuring vampires is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Beginning in 1998, the storyline of the novels circulate around a gifted young woman who has been chosen and empowered to battle the forces of darkness, including demons as well as vampires.
A more modern version of vampires as portrayed in The Twilight Saga has become quite popular with teenagers and young adults. The collection consists of four books and rotates around the romances of the high school student Bella. Jacob, a shapeshifting wolf, and Edward, a vampire, both compete for the affection of this compelling human.
Another teen book series featuring vampires that has captured the world’s attention and even secured a television series is The Vampires Diaries, authored by L.J. Smith. Two vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore, fall in love with the human Elena from the town of Mystic Falls.
Two additional excellent book series that involve vampires are House of Night and Vampire Academy. Vampire Academy tells the tale of a teenage female dhampir, which is the term for the offspring of a vampire and a human. The six books chronicle her encounters at St. Vladimir’s Academy. House of Night contains a similar plotline, where young teen Zoey Redbird is sent to the House of Night boarding school in Oklahoma. This particular series has been showcased on the New York Times Best Seller list on a frequent basis. Want to know more?
